Recreation

Trips, camping, dances, volunteering, movies, parties, bingo, bonfires/hayrides, picnics/potlocks, sporting events, bowling leagues, social events and concerts are just a few of the activities sponsored by the Recreation staff of Easter Seals Arc.  Include with that the training and practice that goes into local and state participation in Special Olympics and you've got a recreation roster of events that fills every week of the year with numerous valuable opportunities for new and fulfilling leisure activities.  

Participants benefit from the program by developing social skills, life skills, communication skills and relationships.  Participants also strengthen mental acuity, improve physical fitness and mobility, become familiar with community resources and are better integrated into the community.  This program also provides support and respite to caregivers who may be burdened with the caretaking responsibilities of family members with disabilities.

We also recognize the common need for new challenges, friendly competition and social interaction with people of all abilities in an inclusive setting.  That's why we welcome input from families and caregivers as well as participants.  We're currently planning more trips to different parts of the country that include travel by airplane...a first for many individuals!  From bingo to visiting a dude ranch, Easter Seals Arc creates solutions that changes lives!

The Ballroom Dance program continues providing adults with disabilities weekly dance lessons taught by  professional dance instructors, held at American Style Ballroom Dance Studio. During lessons, client dancers are paired with a Unified Dancer without disabilities, creating needed program support and community integration. Additional private dance lessons are taught by American Style’s professionals. 

Social dances are held monthly and participants are encouraged to compete in local/state/regional competitions. The program also features the annual Special Olympic and USA Dance competition.  The Special Olympic competition is offered to participants free of charge; participants are also provided transportation, subsidized competition fees and costumes/shoes as needed.
